Am I wrong or is it still not a '59 head...they've always sounded good to me..somehow I doubt Marshall would make it sound thin to sell a few amps...IMO

I don't get it, I always hated Randy's tone. Moster player but his tone's not so great.

I love all the "tone" experts in this thread. One bar into any song Randy played on and you know who it is. He had a distinct tone when he played in QR and he did not have a Marshall then. When he played in OZZY it was something unique enough that we all listened....when it debuted on the radio and our jaw dropped open. Yes, I am that old. I saw him live....it was unreal (and yes, I saw VH "Back in the day", and all the LA shredders.....). As a listener, Randy's playing and unique sound still gives me goose bumps. This is a replica of the amp they built for Randy in 1980. The family let one engineer examine Randy's actual amp.

Sorry if I sound pissed but all the whammy bar, alternate tuning Nu metal players on here talking about tone...that is funny. :ROTF:

I'll join the minority here and say I like the tone on the studio albums. It was said earlier, you need to take things in the context of time. When those albums came out, it wasn't just his playing that blew my mind. His tone on Tribute still floors me after all these years. When I kick the booster on my Bich at full I get darn close to that tone and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

I got to hear this amp demo'd today at NAMM and it sounded REALLY good. Every knob was at 12:00 (on 5), and the tone was lush and thick, with really nice string articulation. If you pushed the mids as this guy in the video does while playing Randy riffs, you'll get in Randy's territory. I was really impressed hearing this amp in person. Although the YouTube video audio gives a good sample, it doesn't have the same impact as it did when I was standing in front of it.

I agree with the Minority here as well, Randy had a tone that seperated him from Eddie, George, Warren and all the other overnight guitar sensations at the time. There is a reason that they still make stuff and put his name on it! He is an ICON in 80's metal. I think the new amp sounds incredible.
