This B17 Bomber was clipped by a German fighter, which took off the vertical tailplanes and severely damaged the structure of the entire aircraft. Take in consideration that the planes in those days did not have hydraulic powered steering or computer powered fly-by-wire, that meant that the pilot had to put in superhuman effort to keep his stricken plane airborn. Because the one system they did have were wires and pullies connected to the stick and the rudder pedals, just getting one of these airborne took some considerate pulling power. And added to the considerate physical effort, the pilot also had to fly really carefully, make a bend too steep and the plane would just break in two. This pilot, Ladies and Gentlemen, made Olympic athletes look like chess players.

That pilot says it himself "The F15 has a wide surface and you're going fast enough, you're a rocket you don't need wings."

And that's the problem with that fake video, there's no way a propellor driven plane can match that feat because it doesn't have the ability to go fast enough to eliminate the need for wings.

Even stronger, when the testpilots who flew the Helldiver prior to it going in production handed in their reports, they adviced the navy NOT to go ahead with it. But nobody listened because the escalation of the war demanded that the Dauntless should be replaced as soon as possible.

When the Royal Fleet Air Arm of the Brittish Navy was offered the plane and got their hands on 26 examples to try out, their findings echoed what the American testpilots already said. The Brittish pilots were so appauled with the Helldiver's flight handling that they never even bothered to go anywhere near an aircraft carrier with it. One of the pilots remarked that for a purposely designed Dive Bomber it never came close into being a dive bomber.

Someone has to have a clipping of the story of the "solo-wing" F-15 landing. It's wing got sheered off in what I recall was a mid air collision and the pilot managed to safely land it. I think it was about 20 years ago is Israel or something.
