Re: SLSMG - What a great guitar!

Mountain Dog, I will save you many minutes and tweaking! I just measured them, remember, I just used my ear - so you might not like my settings. I measured both of them at the top end of the pickup (the end closest to the neck).

On the neck pickup, the treble side was about 3/16 from the bottom of the string. On the bass side it was also 3/16ths.

On the bridge pickup both sides were also between 3 and 4/16ths of an inch from the bottom of the strings. These seem very sensitive to height adjustment. I found there are nice harmonics in them, but if you go too high, you lose them, just a tiny, slight adjustment could make a difference and loss of sustain. It was a balancing act.

How are you enjoying your SLSMG so far?

Hey MD, the bridge pup in that is a Custom 5. You said Alnico 2, just wanted to let you know.

P.S. Don't fall for the EMG hype. That guitar sounds AMAZING with the Duncans in it. I had EMG's in it and I can tell you for sure that it sounds better with the Duncans. YMMV of course. Peace out -Frank.

BTW, does anyone know the style/name of the Jackson 3+3 headstock that they are using now?

I think these are awesome guitars, but I also think that they're priced a few hundred dollars too high. I show one to every metalcore player that comes in and picks up an Ibanez or a Gibson and they are always pleasantly surprised....then they look at the price tag. We put one of the satin black ones on clearance so it came out to about $600 after tax and it got bought that very day. JACKSON IF YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE DROP THE PRICE ON THE SLSMG!!!!

I would own one myself if the neck were thicker.

that's cool, but damn, 999!!! i like mine, but i like it because it wasn't 999!!! i can think of a lot of other guitars i'd rahter have that money go toward than an SLSMG.
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Re: SLSMG - What a great guitar!

I totally agree, they are priced high.... I think 600-700 pending on color would be fair, very fair..... But unless there on clearance like you said, That probably wont logically happen. I hate to say it but I don't think Jackson is interested in lowering there prices.

I remember when I was a kid they were out of reach then when I got a little older they came down a little. Now there trying to get out of reach again. The first Jackson I ever saw looked like cracked concrete. That was SWEET!! I was 14 and didn't have 1299.00usd in grass cutting money. Man, I wish I had that Jackson today. That was like 87' - I am getting old!!

Anyway to move on, yeah it's a little pricey.

Re: SLSMG - What a great guitar!

Yup, I agree they are priced a bit too high. That's why I really had no plans on getting one. They gave it to me for $599 - the price was right. You can get mahogany body guitars by other brands for $500 or under all day long, or if they're going to charge $900 or up, the SLSMG should then have active EMGs or SDs. But at $600-700, its easier to spend a bit more money and upgrade the pickups. Just finished my 4th gig with this guitar, its become my main gig guitar. I love it and have gotten great comments on how good it sounds.

I snagged a FWR slsmg off ebay for $350us cause of a few marks on the back. Ended up landing in aus for au$1200. Retail tag on a new rx10d crimson swirl is au$1399 for comparison ($4199 for dk-1 graphic). Its easily the highest quality guitar I've seen from japan, and it really does play and present like alot more money. I like snobbing PRS's
Id love to put a set of duncans in it, it literally screams on the emghzs! I've never sounded better. I was into getting a jackson, and got a killer deal, especially being down under! Now I've got the USA lust baaaaad

It's basically a budget version of the SL2H, no?

[/ QUOTE ]

I would tend to disagree. I'd say it's more like the SL2HT-MAH if there ever was a mahogany SL2HT. (Hey, that could be an awesome idea for Jackson's next guitar!) It's also an SLS so it's thin and light. So, it's pretty much a unique Soloist on its own and doesn't resemble the other Soloists very much... very cool!

My only gripe with this guitar is that it IS an SLS so it's too thin to ever put a Floyd on, but it's a killer guitar for someone looking for a high-end fixed bridge Jackson import.

At least one or two JCFers have snagged mint used SLSMGs off Ebay for $350USD. Look out for them.

Hi NOTP,

Couldn't they be routed for a non-recessed floyd trem?

Maybe I am in error, isn't the Ibanez S series and Jackson Stealth just as thin?

Re: SLSMG - What a great guitar!

Okay, I have to admit something. I've never seen an SLSMG in person so I don't know exactly how thin the body is. But I've been told a couple of times that putting a Floyd on there is impossible. Maybe it's because the Floyd posts would go right through that thin body and have nothing to anchor onto or something. And, I don't know if the neck is tilted so I don't know if you could put a non-recessed Floyd on there. Either way, it'd be pretty expensive to convert an SLSMG to have a Floyd and I might as well buy another used USA Soloist with a Floyd for that kind of money.

Very true... If you look at the cost ratio... definatley not worth it.

I have one and was thinking of trying to put a trem on it to give it that buttery feel.... Kahler is coming back.... Didn't they have a flat mount that just mounted to the top of the guitar, no routing required?

I didn't mean to come off like I was correcting you... Just curious if it would be possible being I already have the axe and was thinking of it... So you sort of bursted my bubble

I'm gonna go sit in a corner and sob now.

You didn't come off sounding like you were "correcting" me, and if you were, I greatly appreciate corrections. I'd rather be humbled and corrected than being stuck-up and insistent on my wrong, know what I mean?

I am useless when it comes to Kahlers so I have no idea what you will have to mod on the guitar to accept the Kahler. Sorry 'bout that!

Hmmm, I'm thinking that by now, there SHOULD be at least one person in the world daring enough to have tried adding a Floyd to their SLSMG. Newc?

Dude I dunno. The new Ibanez guitars that are real thin like that seem like they're thinner than the SLSMG is, but they have Floyd-style bridges. It could be that the posts on those are different or something since they're of an Ibanez design.
