Were the ke4's also done with no neckplate?

They might have. I know a lot of the early Kellys didn't have neckplates.

They never should have put neckplates on em. Its so comfortable without em and the button placement is perfect. Well perfect to me anyway.

Yeah, my first Jackson was a Kelly Standard in the early '90s, and I liked that no neckplate feature. I didn't have any experience with lo-pro trems and didn't care much for them as I was used to OFRs, so I sent the guitar back to MF. I also had a Kelly XLR in the early 2000s that I also wish I had kept.

I hear that. I had a few xlrs and really wish I kept em. I saw an ad today. It was a minty black xlr. I got excited til I realized it was over a year old lol
