About the flametops getting washed out...I've found the best way to photograph a flame top (especially the bursts) is outside on semi-cloudy day.
I love the way a flash brings out the grain and figuring but, like NOTP said, It also brings out the worst in a guitar too. I always seem to have the same washing out problem whenever photographing my cherryburst SL1 inside or with incandescant lighting.
