  • For all you Emperor-fans

As you probably know they played their first full live show in oh-so-many years yesterday at the Inferno festival in Norway.

I´ll be back with some poor pics and complete setlist later, but I can promise you all that even with a very critical eye this was AWESOME!!!

          Ok, finally home.
If any of you for some reason don´t like to read the set list or whatever please stop here.
And for those of you who don´t care about Emperor, pity you.
Let me just say that there were three Jacksons on stage for almost the entire set.
Samoth with his RR1, Ihsahn with a Dinky.., and Secthdamon with an Explorer shaped bass (Detonator...?)

I didn´t really know what to expect for the show. I´m a big fan of their albums, but have never been satisfied seeing them live.
But this time it kicked ass for sure.
Could be that the happening itself pushed my exitement a little further, but it sure was an awesome gig.

They started off with the intro from the "eclipse" album and followed up with "Into the infinty of thoughts" just like the record.
I found that to be quite a surprise, but very cool. It sounded very heavy and heavy isn´t really the word you think of when listening to "Eclipse".
However, I´m not sure if they played the whole song or made it into another "Eclipse" song medley-wise, but what a flying start it was anyway.

Thus spake the nightspirit - from my all time favorite album "Anthems.."
Great song, nothing more to say.

An elegy of Icaros - Ihsahn´s clean vocals was very good and the song has some very cool and heavy riffing and drumming in the middle. Bassist Secthdamon added troughout the show some growling vocals in addition to Ihsahn´s screams and it was awesome.

Curse you all men - At this point I understood that this would be one of the greatest shows I´ve ever been to. And that´s a great feeling indeed.

Wrath of the tyrant - Yup, oldest song tonight and thinking of Emperor influenced by death metal in the beginning, it was clear to hear exactly that in this song. Sounded very powerful and heavy.

With strenght I burn - that is one great song, and the outro solo was nailed with precision by Ihsahn.

Towards the Pantheon - another "Eclipse.." song. Another triumph!!

The loss and curse of reverence - to me this one sounded a bit chaotic, but maybe I just was a bit overexited and chaotic doesn´t equalize bad..

When Ihsahn came in with a seven string Ibanez we all knew something from the last record would be next.

In the wordless chamber - Cool song, but I´d rather hear one of the first five songs from Prometheus live. The synth sounded a bit akward in that infamous horn section, a bit to thin I´d say.

Inno a Satana - with Ihsahn still playing his Ibanez seven.. no no no

After this they went off stage for a few minutes while the programmed/synth version of Inno a Satana was played.

I am the black Wizards - had to come sooner or later.

Ye entranceempirium - last song for the evening.

Somebody said the synth-player was the brother to Ihsahn wife, I don´t know but he did a good job, but the synth was a tad high from time to time. Apart from that, the sound was truly great. And that´s quite rare..

I even (almost accidently) recieved one of Tryms drumsticks too.
The pics are poor, but it´s not easy to take good pics in a moving crowd, so bear over with me. (that goes for you too Ron, language-wise...)

          Trym

          Ihsahn

So Emperor was using ENGL amps it looks like?

                Killer show, and setlist.

Man I would so kill to see them here in the states over summer, they just aren't coming anywhere even remotely close. Nice pics BTW.

Think that Secthdaemon is still using the Jackson KBX (kelly bass) he's used with Zyklon...

                      Yeah, they used ENGL.
Samoth uses ENGL with Zyklon too.

So if someone had never heard Emperor before, what album would be a good representation of their vibe?
