  • String dampener for practice?

So I was practicing a bit this morning and decided to try a hair scrunchie (sp?) just below the nut for a string dampener to help clean up my playing a bit. I can hear a difference now but my qyestion is; have any of you guys used a dampener in your regular practice routine? I can see it becoming something of a crutch if you geet too used to it so I would like your thoughts on the issue.

If you're using a dampener and not holding your hand on the bridge and are just picking clean, the dampener should act like a donut on a baseball bat if you know what I mean. it should only help your clean picking.

A lot of bass players (Victor Wooten maybe?) use the hair scrunchy thing all the time for recording/live. But then again, they don't care about hitting a nice juicy, ringing open note like guitar players do.
