What's the deal with Porn and Commedia Dell'Arte?

For years I've wondered why the heck so many porn or erotic movies have characters with Commedia Dell'Arte masks? Why? Are those porn movies trying to be deep, symbolic, mystical???
I don't really see much connection, Commedia Dell'Arte was an improvisational Italian theater, mostly active during the baroque era. Some of the characters had weird masks. I've studied this and don't see the connection. Although Commedia Dell'Arte circles around two young lovers but they never wear masks.

So why the heck are people who are fucking in a film wearing those masks?

To answer the initial question, yes, they're trying to make it look artistic by having the performers wear these masks.

They're also trying to make it look artistic by introducing dialog, situational lead-ins to the screwing (i.e. toe stuck in the tub faucet - call the plumber, etc), and worst of all - a plot.

Porn should be all about the screwing - watching other people have the fun you're not having - not the "story". Nothing ruins a porn faster than attempting to show off one's acting ability (character portrayal in a storyline), and nothing ruins a story faster than a gratuitous sex scene - was the 15-minute Brad Pitt screw scene in Meet Joe Black REALLY necessary?
