I have to share this with you young pups. Me and my boy, Keith, lived in our house from 1978 to 2003. Keith since 1983. I was in my back yard and saw a sapling about 12in high. To make a short story long, I put it in a pot and it grew into a small X-Mas tree. We used it for a few years and then planted it outside. When I sold the house, the tree was 25 feet high. My 22 year old son told his friends about it and they thought it was way cool. There is hope for those guys. But try this at home and let the tree grow with the kids. Re: The littlest Christmas tree.
That's a cool story.
A few years ago, my neighborhod offered a Christmas tree recycling program: Recycle your tree, and they would give you a little pine sapling to plant. So I did that for 3 years in a row, and had 3 little pine saplings growing on the side of my house.
Then I hired a local kid to cut my grass...an extra $5 and he'd do the full treatment around the house and sidewalk with a Weedeater. (see where this is going kids?)
So the first day out, he hacks down all three saplings with the Weedeater. I screamed at the kid so loudly that he ran away, and I never saw him again. Little bastard.
That was 12 years ago if I recall correctly. I wonder how big those trees would be now if they weren't hacked down?

Re: The littlest Christmas tree.
Fett, that's pretty awesome! We've been thinking about doing something like that, because we don't want an artificial tree, but don't see the sense in dealing with a cut tree each year.
When I was a kid, I used to beg & beg my dad to let me drive the riding mower. Finally, when I was 10 or so I got to do it. Right off the bat, I turned too tight near an oak he had just planted, caught it with a rear tire & it split it a few inches above ground level. It looked like a goner, but we taped it up & staked it. 30 years later, it's at least 50 feet tall.
