• the haunted/god forbid/god dethroned tonight

i'll leave for this gig in about 1 hour. should be a kickass night. i'm not really into god forbid, but god dethroned has some major balls, and the haunted is one of my alltime fave bands.
be prepared for a review as well as a gear report...as far as possible. they're playing a pretty small club (like 250 max. - the planned venue had to be closed down so this isn't exactly their first choice ) so chances are i'll be able to take a look at their amps and settings. iirc god dethroned played an uberschall as well as an old recto when they played an open air show earlier this year.
- i wonder if the haunted will use the kranks they used in the US, or the old trusty 5150s

so then...3,2,1, go !

ok, i'm back. really nice show, definitely worth the money (18 euro...DUH)

i'm not gonna write a full review right now, just a few words:
god dethroned...mediocre. lame stage acting, decent music, overall...well, mediocre
god forbid: oh dear...the band name says it all basically. crap like that definitely shouldn't be allowed. better stageacting than GD, but still....uuuaaaah
the haunted: very nice, good sound, good show, tight band. peter is a maniac, and jensen...well, do the W !

ok, here we go.

god dethroned came on first. i'm not very familiar with this band, but when i saw them earlier this year playing a festival i thought they did a good job. not so much last night. their stageshow was rather uninspired, the music was OK for the most part. my main gripe is that i though i was picking out good riffs instead of good songs. they definitely have some potential, though. regarding the show...well, they said they were pretty hungover, so that might be the reason for the rather lame show.
on a scale form 1 to 10? a good 6
god forbid came on next. what a piece of crap. very mediocre stuff, or even worse. all the songs sounded the same to me. basically every song had some breakdown chugga chugga staccato part going on. i'm fine with this stuff in general, but come on, not in EVERY song. the singer was talking way too much, too. in contrast to that, the crowd was really into them.....i can't understand it, really, but well, different strokes for different folks. their stage show was a tad better than god dethroned's, though.
2/10....MAX

the haunted came on last. played a lot of new revolver stuff, and also a lot of made me do it, only 1 song from the self titled one, and 1x one kill wonder. as far as i can recall, they played no compromise, 99, abysmal, trespass, dark intentions, bury your dead, hate song, nothing right, all against all, the one one kill wonder song i didn't know, and closed with my shadow. a rather interesting closing song...not exactly the best pick (although it's a great song, just not really a great LIVE song IMHO). jensen is a riffing machine. peter is totally insane....all over the place, but a HORRIBLE singer seriously, maybe it was an off night for him, but his clean vox were way off (although not as bad as the harmonized clean stuff god forbid tried to do), and some of his screams also weren't exactly the best. one funny thing was that he kept having feedback issues, and during one song he just smashed the mic at the ground because of it...LOL
the anders was spot on most of the night. he was doing some very nice natural harmonic stuff at insane speeds, definitely nice to watch.
overall, a solid show. not as ass kicking as nevermore or cannibal corpse, but definitely decent. like 8/10 decent

ok. gear report

god dethroned: lead guitar player played a jackson kelly through a 5150 I (mids pretty high, gain very low, like 2,5-3 or something. a lot of presence, too), the singer/guitar player used the mockingbird as always, through a 2 channel dual recto. at first i prefered the dual recto, it sounded huge during soundcheck, but when the whole band started playing the recto got lost in the mix, the very bright and raw 5150 (mids high and a lot of presence, remember) sounded abrasive when solo'ed, but cut through perfectly, even for leads (without any lead boost!)

god forbid: some V shaped guitars i didn't recognize...looked just like the esp V shape, but had a different logo. now the real surprise were the amps: two krank krankensteins! definitely not as bad as everybody says. i think they were only tuned to d or c# instead of B like god dethroned, so that helped a lot with the clarity, too. overall they had a clearer sound. the kranks sounded great when solo'ed but didn't really stand out in the mix. maybe it's because both guys had a VERY similar sound.
they both used a TS9 for leads, too

the haunted: both jensen and anders had 5150 II amps. all they had on the floor was a tuner, nothing else. jensen played the ESP explorer all night, and anders used his caparison. kickass guitar btw !
they had a very good sound, although i didn't hear jensen very well because i was right in front of anders. kinda overgained IMHO, and also a bit harsh when solo'ed, but when the whole band started playing their sound was really clear. now, the thing is, anders' clean sound seemed to have some chorus going on, but he didn't switch is fx loop on or off, so he either had it on all the time (which i doubt), or my ears tricked me.
i was able to catch a good look at anders 5150 II settings. my problem was that i'm not familiar with the knob layout, so i couldn't quite figure out which knob did what : D
anyways, i tried my best to remember it, and later looked it up in the 5150 II manual i downloaded.
ok....these are merely approximates, mind you
i don't remember a lot of the cleans....all i know is that the pre gain was turned way down, like 2-3, and he had a lot of lows dialed in. the post gain obviously was quite high, around noon
as far as lead goes
pre gain at 6
lows at 8
mids around 3-4
highs around 3
post gain also around 3-4
resonance for both channels at 4
presence clean around 6, lead around 7

now, as for the lead pre gain....does the 5150 II have a lot less gain than the 5150 I ? because 6 on a 5150 I is WAY too much for high volume riffing, esp. using EMGs. he didn't use any lead boost, so that might explain his high pre gain setting.
an interesting fact is that he also turned down the volume pot for clean sounds, which is amazing as the pre gain already was very low. he used the bridge PU for cleans, though, that might be the reason for that.

ah yeah, cabinets were some unknown on stage left (jensen's side), and some marshall 1960B (or BV) on stage right. only one cab per side

ok, kinda long post.....now, is anybody even interested in this crap ?!?!?!

Very cool review, thanks I actually missed that tour when they came through NY. I wanted to see the Haunted again cause they were kickass last time round, but had to work or something
