  • Chicago to regain the title???

Poet Carl Sandberg coined the term in reference to Chicago, the "city of broad shoulders". Originally it was in reference to the burly men that manned the packing plants that made the city such an important hub in middle America. This mentality then rubbed off on our architecture. From the Sears Tower (tallest), the AON Center (2nd tallest) and then the John Hancock Tower (3rd), plans are now in the works to bump the top three down a notch.

Actaually, Taipei 101 is taller than the Petronas Towers and the Petronas Towers are only taller than the Sears because of their sissy spires. If we were allowed to count the antennas on the Sears Tower it would probably be the tallest in the world.

....and while that screwy tower is pretty cool looking, and definitely big, it will be very much overshadowed by the Burj Dubai tower that is underway in the UAE. It will be 800m or 2,624.67 feet high when complete.

You're correct, I forgot about the Tapei tower. It's over 1,600 feet high.

Well, the title, if this building gets approved - which I actually doubt, will be for the US, if not all of North America. Would I like to see Chicago regain the world title again? You bet your bippy!

It will happen soon. One of Chicago's favorite sayings is from one of the city's early planners, Daniel Burnham:
"Make no small plans, they lack the magic to stir men's blood."

Interestingly enough that tower is an expansion of the principles learned with the Sears Tower.
