• Anyone know anything about autism?

As my wife and I have suspected for a while now, it turns out my son Ethan very likely has a less severe type of autism. There were several types of behaviour that made us suspect that there was something not quite right.

-He easily gets fixated on something. He can be sitting watching TV, and if I call his name, he doesn't respond. I can stand right next to him, and say his name very loudly, and it's as if he doesn't hear me. I have to stand in front of him and wave my hands in front of his face to get his attention.

-Rocking/jumping. He does this a lot if he's watching TV, playing video games, or listening to a story.

-Obsessing. We were walking on the beach one day, and he falls, and scrapes his knee. It was nothing, and didn't even draw blood. He started screaming bloody murder, and rubbing his knee. He was rubbing his knee for close to half an hour, before I finally got him to stop. Like all kids, he gets bumps and bruises quite frequently, and for the past couple of months he's been doing this every time.

-Poor attention span. His attention span has always been very short. We enrolled him in soccer last year, and he spent the bulk of his time staring at the clouds and running around waving his arms around. No big deal, that's what 4 year olds are like. Soccer just started again this year, and not only has he not improved, but it seems he has gotten worse. The other kids are starting to get the idea of the game, while my son COMPLETELY ignores the game, and walks around staring off into the distance.

His pediatrician told us that he likely has a form of autism, and ADD, and possibly even OCD. I understand they are all closely related, and often come hand in hand.

Now, other than seeing the movie Rainman, I don't really know much about autism. Every case you see in movies and on TV is much more severe than what we are dealing with. He is actually a very smart kid, is pretty good at math, and reads and writes quite well.

So if anyone has any insight or experience with autism, I'd love to hear it.

How well does he communicate verbally? If he can carry on a decent conversation (to the capacity that a four year old can, that is) I wouldn't even worry about it. Just listen to what the doctor says. In fact, it can even go away with time. I used to work in a special education class for kids ages 6-11. There was a six-year-old autistic that could not communicate at all. I don't think he even realized that he had a name. Kids with autism this severe probably won't pull out of it, but your son's case is the best I've seen/heard. I'm no doctor or anything qualified at all, but it sounds like the ADD and OCD are more of a factor than the autism is. If he can read, write, and do math at four, he is doing excellent, especially for an autistic. I've only seen 11 year old autistics perform at that level. I think your son will be just fine, again just listen to your doctor. Communicate with him as much as possible, as this will increase his interaction skills.

    Good luck!

Thanks man. Actually he's 5 years old now. I guess I was a little unclear. He communicates fine for the most part. Sometimes he has trouble finding the words he wants to use, and sort of gets "stuck", but my wife does that too.

He just shocks me sometimes with what he knows, and what he is able to figure out for himself. He can tell you all 9 planets in our solar system in order of closest to the sun to farthest, hottest to coldest, smallest to largest. He knows that Pluto has an elliptical orbit, and is sometimes closer to the sun than Neptune. He tells me last night that we could live on Mars if there was more oxygen. It's amazing the stuff he knows, but at the same time, sometimes he seems socially inept.

He gets in trouble at school sometimes too. There was a little girl in his class who had brought a pepperoni stick for snack time. Ethan wanted it and tried to take it from her. She told the teacher, and the teacher asked Ethan not to take things from people. Well, a little while later, he went up to the little girl and said "I'm going to kill you."
I don't know where he got the idea to tell her that. Sometimes I get the feeling that he doesn't think of other people as real, that they are just scenery.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

Even for five years old it sounds like he is doing okay. That's a great sign that he's in school and functioning in class. Maybe socially he'll come around. Honestly, this is the first autistic I've heard of that can function this good. As I said earlier, even the 11 year old autistics didn't function like this.

Perhaps you could look into seeing a specialist. He could steer you in the right direction. He could tell you for sure if he has autism, and if he does he could give you tips on how to help him. If not autism, he could probably tell you what it is and refer you to somebody else.

Does he read through encyclopedias or something? That's some unusual information for a 5 year old. I remember that a big thing back in the special education class was to not allow them to obsess. Get him to interact socially as much as possible.

In rare cases autism can go away. If you get help now and stop the problem, your son will have a great chance. My little brother was thought to be autistic because of similair behavior. It turns out he just played too many goddamn video games! He still plays a lot of Nintendo, but at least he's not thouroughly convinced that he's Batman now!

        In any case, good luck!

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

Social skills for really smart kids dont always come easy.My son goes to a gifted and talented only school and there are quite a few kids who sound very simular to yours.I know that shayne's school work will be good n comes natural to him. SO i have concentrated on the social aspect of his life. Its hard work to teach them how to act because you think they are smart with everything.Thats not the case though so i go over how to behave so the kids be more receptive to what he wants to do, how not to be overbearing , ect...

It sounds like the kid has parents who will go to bat for him, and thats a great thing for him to have.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

I'm no doctor, but I do know that autism is something that is frequently missed entirely or just plain misdiagnosed, especially with children.

While some of the things you mention could be signs pointing towards autism, they're also things that some non-autistic kids do at that age anyway.

Bottom line: I would get a second opinion. And if the 2nd doctor gives you the same diagnosis, I would ask for a referral to a specialist and get a THIRD opinion from a doctor who has real expertise in autism.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

Definately seek a 2nd opinion, and as Shreddermon said if they agree seek a specialist. I have a 2 year old and everything you mentioned he does at some point. I always understood autism as being(in lamens terms) the inability to interact with others(I know it is more complex), but if you child interacts with you, hugs you, wants to be held, and is comfortable with physical contact and communication. I wouldn't think that autism was the problem. If there even is one. He may be a little slower to adjust to group activities/sports. Maybe he is a daydreamer?. The web is a great place to find info and interact with each other, but it is also not the be all end all to diagnosis. Look up any disease/mental condition and everyone here will find something on the "list of sysmptons" that applies to them or their family members.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

The pediatrician referred to autism, and a similar disorder called Asperger syndrome.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

Might be Asperger's syndrome, which is often characterized as a milder form of autism. Many people have it and are able to function quite well in society. People with full-fledged autism generally have much more difficulty. If your child is in a regular school and gets by reasonably well, Asperger's is a much more likely diagnosis than autism. But I would definitely get the opinion of an expert in autism and related disorders. Also be aware that there are many organizations that prey on the parents of kids with autism, promising miraculous cures if only you can shell out enough cash. We have a good friend whose 4 y.o. son has autism. For a long time it was unclear whether autism or Asperger's was the proper diagnosis since he was rather high functioning. She's come across a lot of these scams and it can be really hard to tell what is legitimate.

                        Best of luck.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

Get a 2nd opinion. The 1st doctor won't be offended at all.

Also, there has been lots of recent findings on environmental factors and autism such as pollution/heavy metals/mercury/etc.

                          http://news.monstersandcritics.com/p...sm_Heavy_metal

You should see if there's something in your area that may be the same as some of these potential smoking guns. Not that I'm saying the findings are 100% conclusive, but in the case of my kids, I would err on the side of caution.

Finally, I would get on an autism board and start talking with other parents. Doctors are not infallible. The pile of research that goes on that doesn't cross a doctor's desk is huge. You cannot depend on one doctor's (or two doctor's) ability to sift through the complete set of research that can potentially affect your son's future. But a collective set of parents sharing the same problems is a powerful force. Check out...

a very young cousin of mine (5? 6?) was recently diagnosed with asperger's syndrome. from what i understood, the child is crazy smart (can math like a motherfucker, and took up spanish), but has a real tough time with socialization. he's going to a school now that kinda specializes in autism.

Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

My wife was at the school yesterday signing some papers allowing the school and our pediatrician to exchange information. I can't believe how well, and how quickly they are taking care of this. I'm truly shocked. Apparently, there are 3 other kids (in older grades)at Ethan's school who are diagnosed with this, and they have a great program for them. By the sound of it, he's going to get a lot of one-on-one attention, which is exactly what he needs.

I also talked to my wife about getting a second opinion, but it turns out our pediatrician is extremely experienced with autism and AS, and is usually very reluctant to make rash diagnoses.

I'm very happy with how this is turning out. He's going to get the help that he needs. The education system does something right for a change!
