Re: Some Kind Of Monster....?

Honestly...I think Rob is an awesome bassist but, he will do nothing to bring back any kind of the earlier Metallica.

I also think James is the only good writer in Metallica. He just doesn't have it in him any more. Good for the newer fans sad for us old fans.

Both his parents died when he was teenager, lets not forget about Cliff. I think that stuff counts as tragedy.

Funny you started this thread as I just watched half of it last night and thought it was GREAT.
I recommend you to watch it if you haven't and if you were/are a fan of Metallica, you must.
Mustaine part, I agree. I almost started to cry watching it.
The same goes to Jason Newsted part where he was telling how he quit the band.

I am going to see the rest of it later tonight.

I didn't know Jason wanted to rejoin...its an okay movie...the bonus stuff is much better. My fave part is when Rob came to play and the staff was trying to find him a bass. The staff guy said "collectively (Metallica) has some 500 or 600 guitars..but they are not all here (studio)"....no kididng..lol.

Imagine getting to visit for a day and pull out all those cases and see the guitars...man that be cool.

Re: Some Kind Of Monster....?

I saw it in the movies with my friend who is a huge Metallica fan and saw it again when he bought the DVD. I really do almost despise what they've done and become. They haven't gone through anything that most bands don't go through themselves, yet they saw the oppertunity to film it all and sell it to us. They took their own insecurities and faults as people and as a band and then made a profit on it, which is kinda sickening to me. Bob needs to basically speak when spoken to kinda thing when it comes to producing their new music and James needs to go back to writing the music and lyrics as it used to be. After all, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Nothing wrong with his lyrics or songs before this. I'm glad he's sober and all, but he needs to remember why they started making music in the first place and take that fire and inspiration and kick some ass with the new album. That film just showed everyone plain as day that whole album was forced and broken down mechanically. If he dosen't have it or dosen't want it anymore, bow out gracefully instead of putting out garbage and putting a smudge on the Metallica name. The Mustaine thing kinda pissed me off too, but I felt sorry for the guy at the same time. Him saying he'd give up everything he has to go back in time and play with Metallica (and not get kicked out) to me was just a smack in the face to his millions of fans. He basically takes for granted all the success he's had for the past 15 or so years. That pissed me off, but for him to also not get over it by now is also a serious mental issue and I hope he can get over it one day. I know he said he has and won't speak of it again, but it's Dave. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's hard. And Lastly on the DVD and Metallica: For god's sakes get a real drummer! K, I'm done, lol.

Watch the bonus material version of what was said between Dave and Lars. It's not so much that he hasn't "gotten over" being kicked out of Metallica, as it is nobody will LET him get over being kicked ut of Metallica.

Like I said, very creative editing.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

I watched it the night before and last night. The bonus footage has some great stuff. Check out the additional Dave footage. The commentary was great too.

I am a big old Metallica fan (still get together with some bros and jam out on the 80s stuff one every few months for fun. I will not be buying this latest blatently vacant attempt at further self-promotion. I remember what they were and I do not like what they have become, therefore, no more money from me. Its the only thing that Lars understands anyway. Nuff said.

Yes you're right...I still found the whole thing to be quite pretentious though. When they were getting all fired up about the album it just didn't seem genuine. I think they wanted it to be but it seemed half hearted at best...It was cool when they gave that "Isnt it so trendy that I am Metallicas shrink and I really think it's in your best intrest to keep me on your fat payroll because we are so close to a breakthrough" hollywood Psychiatrist the fukking boot! Wasnt that scum negotiating the purchase of some property?

I picked it up at Circuit City for $15.99 and I must admit, it rocked. Some parts were hard to watch and I thought all the theropy and talking shit out and here are my feeling bullshit was a bit tired. All in all tho it was a cool film and really showed the many sides of the band.

I am a fan from WAY back as well...I was lucky enough to see them with Cliff on the Puppets tour and they were AMAZING! I agree that the newest CD has a couple decent trax but all in all it was lame and what the **** was with that snare sound? My honest opinion is more of the CD would have rocked had Bob and Lars went with the old school drum sounds...the drums are irritating to the point that you dont even want to listen to the songs anymore.

Anyway, for my money the DVD was a good purchase...better than the St Anger CD purchase anyway! Lets hope someday they go back and release some of the old concert footage, now THAT is something worth watching!

Yeah, he did plan on buying property nearby. And if you watch with the band commentary, you will see how much that scene where he submits lyrics bothered them. I think at one point Kirk refers to him as the "Leper Messiah".

If you guys want to see something interesting, go to the extra features disk and watch the music video. They remixed "Some Kind of Monster" with a regular snare drum!
