Computer problem, keeps booting up!!!

Hello,
Hope you can help.
Lately my wifes comp, takes 4-6 reboots to load into XP.
Today it won't boot into XP at all.Keeps going through the booting process.
I tryed all the diff boot modes like safe mode,last known good mode,normal mode....
Any ideas where to start?

How far does it get in the boot process?

it shows the XP logo with the green bar, then a flash of a blue screen that says it had a bad shut down, then it ends up booting again and ends up in the place to select the diff boot modes to try.

should I try booting with the XP cd and try a Repair?

I doubt if you'll be able to repair without a recovery disk, but you can try it, if not, it sounds like you'll need to re-install the OS over the top of the current, just don't format unless you absolutely have to.

Does it stop at the same place, each time? Do you have an extra power supply laying around by chance? I've seen something like this before with a bad power supply, but most of the time, it's a re-install.

How critical are the docs and files on the C drive?

I have a backup hard drive with norton ghost on it.
I ghosted a few week ago. I was also thinking Power supply.
Anyway to troubleshoot a power supply without replacing it?

hack one in there, just plug the drive and board into one really really close... Pull one out of another machine and just set it in the wife's and try it.

See if it will boot up with the ghost disk, it's got an os on it, right? Is it from that machine?

Ok. going to try the Ghost first. It is a clone of the main drive.

OK, The Ghost backup fixed it.
It must have been a bug or something.
If you guys don't have a back up, like a Ghosted hard drive.
or DVD backup, well... it saved my ass AGAIN!!
It only took 30mins to do the whole thing. [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]
