On a plasma, you have to watch out for burn-in. Make sure your unit has an auto-wobble feature. It moves the picture a few pixels up/down/left/right once every five minutes to prevent burn-in by things like the station logo.
Also, I have found that dark scenes don't render well on plasma...at least the early generation ones (which I unfortunately own). Rent a DVD with a lot of dark scenes and watch it on the unit you're thinking of buying.

The burn-in is exactly what I was going to mention...same goes for LCD.
