• Rolling Stones 100 Greatest??? Guitarists

This might be old news to everyone:

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...player=unknown

I remember thinking WTF when I saw this a couple years ago. The bottom half of the top 20 is particularly disturbing with Kurt Cobain, John Frusciante, and, at #17, Jack White!!!

I was reminded of that list when I just saw a tab from a White Stripes song, and except for the intro and the, um, "solo", the whole song is barre chords played in open E tuning. I'm still a beginner on the guitar and I can play the damn thing! (Not worth my time to retune and try, though.)

You'll see a lot of great players on down the list as well as more duds, but the most shockingly out-of-place guitarist is at #70. Eddie Van Halen is the 70th greatest guitarist of all time??? Jack White is a greater guitarist than Eddie Van Halen???

I don't consider Rolling Stone an authority on good music, but how could anybody have their head that far up their ass? This is blasphemy!

Truth is that there will never be one list to satisfy everybody. One person's hero is another person's wanker. Personal bias goes into a lot of those useless lists, so I never pay much attention to them.

You can say what you want, but Eddie Van Halen at #70 is a frickin joke! I realize that this should take into consideration writing and playing ability, but do you think these players are better than Eddie?!?!

>Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (great writer, but a better player? No.)

>Jack White of the White Stripes (No comment)

>John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (better than Eddie?)

>Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane (Come on now!)

>Ike Turner (this is getting re-goddam-diculous!)

Most of the other players before Eddie were at least subjective enought to argue but these guys before Eddie? He must have done something to piss off Rolling Stone. There is no logical reason why he shouldn't have been in the top 10 or 15 IMHO.

C'mon. Rolling Stones exists for one reason. To sell magazines. Period. What they print is simply a reflection of their subscription base and what was determined by some marketing dude to be an enjoyable read by the majority of them. Which are the baby boomers hanging on to a glimmer of their youth. I'd put 0 stock in any top x list that they came up with. This is on par with People's top 100 sexiest men alive or whatever. Move along...nothing to see here.

Re: Rolling Stones 100 Greatest??? Guitarists

To fairly judge a "greatest" talent contest one must hear ALL the players involved NOT just the popular ones..

This is NOT a list of the greatest guitarists ...it is a list of the most popular...no more , no less..

I have comprised THE list of the best guitarist in the world...because I know ALL the players involved..it is not the popularity contests of these clueless rags..such as Guitar World or Rolling Stone.

Those are just popularity contests...that is it!

I will not read them nor take them seriously because the folks that comprise these lists are ignorant to the vast majority of the true talent that is out there.

I'm obsessed with Guitar and the very elite that play them...all of them....every single one of them...and most of them are NEVER on ANY list.

I remember getting all worked up & pissed about this list when it came out. Not gonna go through that again. I agree 100% with Bill, & I'd like to see his list as well.

As a side note, Jorma is a hell of an acoustic player. I've got one of his solo albums on tape somewhere & I like it way better than any Airplane I ever heard. I need to go find that one.

and Robin Trower didnt even make the list? Randy placed 85 and tony placed 86? then again who here really buys or reads rolling stone mag anyway?
Bill post that list, i am sure yours is way more informed than the mag as you have most likely actually listened to the guitarist that are placed on the list

Re: Rolling Stones 100 Greatest??? Guitarists

I remeber working on a job where we had bunch of loudmouth knuckhead sheetrocker/drywall subs working. I was doing my thing and could hear these dudes shooting the shit aruging all day. Part of their arguement was that Jack White was one of the best guitar players ever. It was between him and somebody else just as miffing. Im sure Avril Lavigne was mentioned.
I felt like going over and giving them my 2 cents worth but opted not to. Im sure the radio doesn't play any of the guitar players i would mention.

p.s. One of these guys brought in pictures of his girlfriend naked to the job-site. He showed me them. Bearing in mind I did not know him and never really talked to him.

p.p.s Oh yeah and his girlfriends father was his boss and worked on the same job.

These people have no business even being on that list.

I think a discussion about the order would be nonesense, but at least there are some guitarists who can be called "great".

put "most popular" over the other list, an good is!!
