• Songs that are a must in any rock/metal players library

Okay, I've been playing for about 82000 years. Okay, more like 10-11-12, I don't know. I can play pretty much whatever I want, within reason. There are some things that are just too crazy complex.

One thing is though, if I hear things on the radio, I pick up the main riff, or melody line, and just play it, and don't learn the song. Years, and years of this, I don't know as many songs as I should, and can play ability wise. I've only learned what I've been personally interested in, and what the band has played.

All of that said, I'm interested in hearing what you think that rock players/metal players should have in their libraries of music they can play. If I think of all the songs I can play, it's several hundred, but I don't know them all the way through (meaning what I didn't pick up on the radio or whatever, not the solos), when I actually go to the songs I know completely, It's a much smaller number. Give me some of your thoughts, and thank you in advance.

Damm Matt I just started taking my first guitar lessons after 15 years of faking it in Metal bands, & you throw a list like this out there.

I don't think that some one can make a list and say thats what every rock/metal guitarist should know, unless they make themselves, just cuz of certain musical preference... no offence newc

Golden Earring
-Bullet Hots The Bone

That last one's called "Twilight zone"

Don't forget these:

Born to be wild, Magic carpet ride (Steppenwolf)
Once bitten twice shy (Great white)
The boys are back in town
a couple of Bon Jovi songs (for the girls)
Balls to the wall (Accept)
Everybody's workin' for the weekend
Bad Company self titled (whole album)
Journey (anything from greatest hits)
Welcome to the jungle, Paradise city, Sweet child of mine (Guns and Roses)
What? no Dokken?

and a million more I can't think of!
These are just some of the songs that are considered "Standards" for a rock/metal band, at least when I used to play.
Have fun,
Joe

Damn typos
And yeah you're right, Twilight Zone

Anyhoo, yeah, Bad Company (the song), and some of their others.

It helps to have a well-rounded repertiore. You can learn only the songs of one particular genre and still not be a well-rounded player, because you're missing out on the simplicity or technicality of other styles. Plus you open yourself up to a wider range of ideas that may work with other ideas nobody else thought of, or maybe implement them in a differnt way.

Most importantly, the songs I listed will build your rhythm skills (I detest the term "chops") as well as your soloing.

And don't forget Pink Floyd

Regarding Bon Jovi, et al - I personally would not play a song that was guaranteed to get me laid, because I don't view music as a means to get laid, but that's just me. If you want to get it and get it often, learn whatever's on the radio. Don't forget to get tested every week

That Nazareth song is "Hair of the Dog", btw. Great list, though it can go on and on.

There's nothing wrong with getting laid by playing music though; you just have to use protection and be a little more picky than we were in the early 80s. The thing is to snag the chicks who already dig the music you like, preferably yours as well as the standards. That way you're hanging with women you have common interests with, not just banging some hip-hop chick just because she's hot.

2 rules: no smokers, no hip-hop/rap!

Sometimes I waive the no-smoking thing.
Can't waive the hip-hop/rap thing though.

Yeah, well, can't say I'm a Nazareth owner - I only heard the song a few times in a row and played it once live, but that was it

And the sex-type-thing runs contradictory to my personal beliefs, that's all.
I've had the offers (from all 4 corners), but I'm just not interested period.

Lessee, another good artist/group to learn from would be Eric Clapton, Hendrix, and maybe some Journey as was mentioned.

I think you've all rouned it out quit well. WE do need to hear from the heavier side though

My 2 cents..

ELP - From the beggining
STP - Core (the whole album)
Zepp - stairway to Heaven was my first!
Slayer - Riegn in blood
Kiss - (the whole catalog!)
Alice in Chains (anything)
Nirvana (almost anything)
GnR - Appetite for Distruction (the whole album)

Forgive me if I doubled anybody up!

Jim
The rest was really already covered in my opinion.
