X-Japan are definitely worth looking into. Astounding musicians and compositional form. Their first 2, Vanishing Vision and Blue Blood, are the "Metal" albums you need, while their 3rd and 4th drifted into a more over-polished and "grown-up" range, sort of like Winger meets Dream Theater. The songs weren't bad, but weren't as "Metal" as the first 2 albums IMO. 3 and 4 were done in L.A. in the mid-90s, as I understand it, and it sounds like it.
