I haven't been to that part of NC in a long time, but friends say Asheville has become a pretty cool place with a lot to do, some really good restaurants, etc.

Check out the McDonalds. Supposed to be the fanciest McD's anywhere. It was on the Travel Channel.

The Orange Peel is a damn good club to see an act. They have some pretty big acts that roll through there too. I saw Tesla there in 2009. If you're a hippy you'll fit right in. For a place in the middle of nowhere in the sticks it is full of tree huggin' hippies...
