I agree, the X2N is hard to beat. Though, the Mustaine LiveWires do sound like passives, just a little tighter bass response and with a little more gain.

I've heard from a lot of people that the LiveWire is just plain overkill.

I've heard that, too. That's just the Heavy Metal version. I guess it would be cool if you've got a lower gain, non master volume amp and want to push it over the top. The Classic is less gain and is supposed to clean up nicely, a good choice for both neck and bridge, or just the neck if people want to pair it up with the extreme output of the HM in the bridge.
The Mustaines I really like, just active versions of the JB and Jazz, and I've never really been a big fan of the JB.

Improved LiveWire Metal is now Blackouts AHB-2 Metal, and it requires one 9V battery.

I put the Blackouts in my RR3 last night. Yeah, obviously had to take out and replace all the existing wiring - pots, jack etc (switch stays the same). Never had to rout anything, they fitted straight in easy enough.
Only had them in since last night, but I CAN confirm these things sound fucking great! For rythm or lead they really do the trick - the neck pup is surprisingly nice, andit cleans up better than any pup I've ever had before. Even the jazz and custom I had coil split didn't sound as good clean as the Blackouts do.

If anyone wants to make their guitar more metal, but can't find a passive pup they like, get Blackouts!

Ha ha, well yeah, let's hope so!

I tried recording just a little free form soloing over a track I already had recorded, and the Blackouts sounded awesome. My playing sounded like crap, but the actual guitar tone was fantastic - really professional sounding, even more so than anything I get with other Duncan pups.
It really seems to have opened this guitar up for me. I now have FOUR guitars that I love, all of which have a different sound.

I just mounted a set of Blackouts in my Model 5 and they sound great in it too. The tone control could use a little bit more roll off for my taste but otherwise they are very natural sounding pick-ups for actives. The one thing I've noticed is I definitely like the sound of the neck more than the bridge. I think someone on here mentioned they use the neck model in the bridge position and it sounds great and I believe them.

Now I need to figure out what to do with all the extra room in the control cavity since I've pulled out the JE-1200 and the much larger original pots hehe.

I put the DM Actives in my RR3 and I really love how they sound. I haven't tried the blackouts.

Yeah I've read a couple of people on forums saying the use the neck Blackout in the bridge position too. I'm happy with them the way they are.
I agree though, the tone control seems to do very little. But then I don't really use the thing anyway!

                            I

I was one of them. The bridge just has 222 much of everything for me. The neck in the bridge has that Alnico V sweetness that I just love!

Whats the advantage (if any) to running 18 instead of 9?
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil
