    It worked for me.

P.S.I have also placed a piece of folded paper under the nut.

Well after 3(!!!!) business cards cut and placed under the nut all is well.

But I noticed something. The nut I took off is an R3 and I replaced it with an 4 because I thought the guitar had an R4 on it. Will that be a problem?

The diff between an R3 and an R4 is string spacing. The R4 is a tad wider in the spacing.

Your high E and low E will be closer to the edge of the fret board.
If you find yourself rolling a string off the board edge, get an R3.

Gotcha. Hopefully that won't be a problem. I wish I would have looked before I bought the R4.

I noticed the one you replaced was not the original nut either.
My PC3 had a stock satin finish R4 on it when I got it new.
It now has a black R4 nut on it. No problems with string roll off.
The board is plenty wide enough to handle it.

Of course my PC3 now has a PC1 neck on it, so it's kinda moot.

This thread has inspired me! I think I"m going to go get a knife and scallop one of my fretboards. Be right back. If someone stuck a knife anywhere near my fretboard, it'd be death.

It does feel a little uncomfy with the R4 on it. My first PC3 had the stock nut (I'm assuming R3) and I liked the string spacing a lot better.

I have thicker fingers, so the R4 spacing is more comfortable to me.
                    Easy enough to fix though.

                                Hey Bryan,

I had lots of problems with nuts as well, but in my case it was the opposite way. The nuts were way too tall. This was on a 1989 ESP. I think back in the old days nuts were short, and lately they have become taller. I have an old R2 nut that worked, but I wanted a wider nut. I gave up searching after 2 R3 nuts and 2 R4 nuts. The R2 is a little narrow, but it get's the job done and the string height is perfect.

Putting so much stuff under a nut might lead to instability at the nut and loss of tone. I'd search for a tall R3 nut if you haven't already.
