I did a swap with my old Jackson (81 to 85). 85 sounds more rich and masculine in bridge, that's for sure. I prefer 85 way more over 81. 81 is too 80's sounding. Like Metallica.

Tried Both in the bridge position in my RR1 along with a 60 in the neck
never tried any of them in the neck position of that guitar
Can't say wich one i like better.... the 81 stays in the meanwhile
81 has more of a thrash sound to it like At The Gates or slayer , way more tight and clear
85 has more ooomph like the In flames tone, nice fat lead tone as well
I tune to B so I have no prolem with bass
I have a gig two weeks from now and we are playing some at the gates stuff and the 81 delivers that tone

I had the guitar originally wired with the 85 and 60 but i was curious about the 81 so i bought it too few months later
totally hated it at first but after i tweaked it a little bit i could get a great thrash tone from it

so i like both, each serves it's purpose

the 85 is more dynamic in the bridge, and too fat in the neck.

therefore it makes sense that 85b/81n is the only way to go out
