    If you like a scooped out midrange sound, the Steve's Special will do (named for Steve Blucher from DiMarzio, not Steve Vai). If that sound is not for you, be prepared to turn the mids up on your amp.

      I have the Steve's Special in my Alder bodied 1987 Soloist (bridge) and i don't think it sounds overly scooped. Maybe my preamp settings helps, dunno. To me, the SS sounds very punchy and raw. It's nice.
