Re: Locking tuners: pros and cons

    [ QUOTE ]
i have a set of grover locking tuners, and they work fine, with the exception of the high E and B strings; it's very difficult to get the string out of there when it's time to change the strings.

That seems to be a problem with locking tuners sometimes. I've heard of people using Sperzels and having the high E string get stuck in there... seems the pin inside seizes up. Usually if you tap on it, the pin loosens and you can get the string out. I actually had one totally seize up from a Carvin DC400 I bought a few years back off ebay... the thing is now sitting in my parts drawer and still will not budge. I was able to forcefully pull the string out, but the pin is still seized even after taking it off the guitar and smacking it with a hammer, bashing it on concrete, using a shitload of WD40, nothing works!! At least Carvin was cool and transferred the warranty over to me and sent me a free Sperzel. They'd heard of this seizing happening before, but usually the pin eventually pops loose... they couldn't believe mine never popped free.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Sully, have you tried using a screwdriver on the top of the tuning post to loosen the E and B strings?

no, i sure haven't; they're gold., so i didn't wanna mess them up. i'll give it a try on my next string change, though...

Do standard Sperzels have holes which would fit .52 or even .56 strings?

          I know a 0.052 string fits fine...Not sure about a 56.

I had Sperzels on a Washburn Grover Jackson series that I tuned to B and strung with a custom .062 gauge low string. Had to ream out the tuner with a small drill bit. No big deal, worked fine.
