89s are supposed to be really close to 85s in humbucker mode. You can hear the difference but it is really really subtle. But with 89s you have a single-coil option, but I don't use that, especially hate it on the bridge so why bother? I just use 85.

I just got my 1st 81 in a ESP M1 I got off of Ebay a few months back and I'm finding that I am starting to not care for the tone. It seems kinda of whiney in pitch with also a very thin and weak clean sound. But that was no surprise I have heard that mentioned alot for the clean tones. I think I still prefer my JB TB4 in my SL1. Just my opinion/2 cents.

Apparently the 81 was designed to have a very flat EQ, so it would be easy to tweak the tone with rack effects or in the studio. For someone who prefers simple setups, it may not be a good choice.

A lot of death metal kids like the 81 because its mids sound a bit scooped, but as soon as you roll back the gain a bit, it gets really dull.
