headroom is a good thing for metal. (crisper transients = "going from 0 to 11 as fast as possible") more headroom (18V) = more CHUNK, and 'tighter'

I say go for it, you won't regret it! (I'd just put them in the cavity like Newc said, it's not like they need to be changed particularly often and it looks nicer and means less wood is removed from the body of the guitar)

I don't get the "less wood removed" idea. I mean, a battery box takes up a miniscule amount of wood; I just think they look stupid. If a battery box is there for convenience, it must be a royal pain in the ass for everyone but me to remove 3 or 4 screws to get into the control cavity once every few months

I'm still fuzzy on the transients thing - going from 0 to 11 faster indicates it allows the signal to distort quicker, which someone else says happens with a 9v system
How does Webster's Guitar Dictionary define "Headroom" and "Transients"? I always thought hobos and vagrants were "transients", and "headroom" is something tall people are always lacking

I used to work in a porno video store, and one of the strangest moments I remember from working there was listening two customers having a conversation about "transients" and "home owners." See, one of them had a thing for she-males and the other was gay.

Okay, I guess you had to be there...

please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

I have mine 18 volts just cause I wanted to do it. But i haven't compared the two cause it had been a while since I had emgs-

I wouldn't get the battery box for this reason-you don't change batterys that often and if you ever decide you want a different pickup(you never know) you have an empty battery box- Whats cool is the little clips they put in the active guitars like my fusion-a 9volt snap right in the control cavity although you need 2-

Also with a battery box your wiring goes to the box-just another pain if you change- But if emg is the only pickup you ever want and youy are never selling it get the box and a clip in the cavity- I went 18 volts just cause I could but with two fresh batteries it almost seems like too much I like them a little worn

does the sound really change that much?? just from the battery being new or slightly used???

I am unsure the 85 is real dark though-I am changing batteries this weekend when I get home a see if its just something I made up or actually true- Maybe I just get use to the settings on my amp with the batteries low and then it changes with new batteries-that is probably more accurate-

But yes as they wear down the are not as gainy-IMO

I may just try the 18V system and have them put in the cavity, the boxes kinda look weird on the back of the guitar. Jack.
