NOTP, I just got a Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow guitar, Les Paul shape (fits perfect in a LP case), and they have an interesting neck/body joint. Here's a couple MKs on ebay that show the back of the guitar:

I've heard about Michael Kelly guitars before, and the reason why I remembered that name in particular was because one of my co-workers shares the same name. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] But yeah, those neck joints look pretty comfy! But you'll notice how the lower cutaway blends with the upper bout gracefully, rather than 90 degrees like a typical Les Paul, which is probably what aids in the smooth transition and a slightly scooped heel. Still, it looks a little easier with this design than the traditional Les Paul heel. Thanks for the pics!! [img]/images/graemlins/toast.gif[/img]

What about just shaving the heel of a Les Paul. Would that compromise the solidity of the joint?

Although I can't find a pic, the Neal Schon LP has a similiar neck joint as that Shamray above. I have the magazine somewhere, but can't remember which one it is in. It was in an issue of Guitar One. It was supposed to be a sig guitar, but I don't know if it will ever see the light of day.
