Re: EMG\'s on a KV1?

I don't think so. Why don't you get both an 81 and an 85? You can change them around and according to which one you like you can trade the other straight up for another EMG.

That is my plan, and the reason I traded one of my 81s for your 85 Veli. My KV1 had double 81s, and while I like the sound of the 81, I really want to try out the 85 too. I hardly ever use the neck pickup, so whichever one I like the best will be staying in the bridge slot.

Re: EMG\'s on a KV1?

I have two of the same guitar (ltd mh400 nt) and one that's practically identicle (ltd mh1000). To compare the pickups, I had two 85s in one mh400nt, two 81s in the other, and two 60s in the mh1000.

In the bridge, the 85 has nowhere near as much crunch at the 81 or 60. If you listened to them side by side in the same the guitar, you wouldn't even be wasting your time with an 85.
In the neck position, the 60 dominated all. The 81 was second best, and the 85 was too bassy and muddy.

i have emg 85 in the bridge, and it has all the crunch you want + it has balls and fat sound

if you don't have enough crunch then check your amp and effects, it's not only pickup's fault

but beware, it's pretty dark sounding and if you don't like that, stay away

My KV Pro has the 81 bridge & 85 neck, and I actually like it alot, that way, I'm looking to go with 81 bridge & 89 in the neck of my DXMG, likely right after xmas.
I also have the KV wired for 18v

Re: EMG\'s on a KV1?

18v is the best setup for EMGs... it gives you plenty of headroom and takes the very slight compression/saturation away, it makes the signal a little more crispy and it also improves clean sounds when you turn the volume down... The only downside is that you'll need to replace 2 9v batteries when it's time.

As for the 85 not having nearly as much crunch as the 81? Riiight. You may need to back the low and mid EQ off the 85 and set it differently than with the 81. The 85 isn't as tonally flat as the 81. The 85 is a much more brutal sounding pickup, IMO.

As for masking the tone of woods, that's really an old wives tale... People who say that haven't tried EMGs in a variety of guitars, and are most likely used to low to mid gain pickups would probably be most likely to say this. EMGs are low/mid gain alnico or ceramic PASSIVE pickups with internal preamp boosting... it's very much like using an overdrive pedal with a guitar with a conventional pickup.

There are quite a few passive pickups with higher output than the EMG 81/85.

Re: EMG\'s on a KV1?

EMGs muddy?!? I don't think so, no matter what position. Hell, I've got an 85 in the bridge of my ALL mahogany Les Paul, with an 81 in the neck. No mud whatsoever. And the 85 actually has more measurable output than the 81... look on EMG's site for the specs.
I've tried the 85 in the neck of other guitars before, and I probably wouldn't mind an 85 in the neck of the LP, but over the years I've found a darker pup in the bridge with a brighter pup in the neck suits my tastes better.

Just dropped off DXMG to get 81 in bridge & 89 in neck, wired for 18v, 2 volume, no tone push/pull to split 89. Hopefully will be done by saturday (waiting for 89 to be delivered to store, so tech can install both pickups).

will let you know how it sounds then hopefully.

Just out of curiosity, why did you get the 89 over the 85 if you aren't going to use it in sa mode?

I just wired mine to run on 18 volts and it actually sounds more organic/less sterile. Opens it up quite a bit.

I think the 81 is better for leads, where the 85 is great in the neck. I'm using the 81/85 combo with "the mod" ... ... and it's great.
