If you need a direct mounted pickup to be up higher, just put some foam under it and use a longer screw. It worked perfect on one of my string-thru Dinkies that I put a Tone Zone in. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

Where can I get black metal rings? I see the short ones often, but never see the taller metal bridge pickup rings offered.

Not many guitars look good with direct mounts IMO. I pretty much always prefer rings. I did see a direct mount job on a Les Paul Custom though....made a $2000 look like a piece of garbage.....well that and the fact it was covered in stickers [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]
