It can't be the nut because open strings are fine - it's when I play on the first fret.

Ahhh. Gotcha. Is it buzzing on all of the strings? If it's just the outer strings, the fret ends might be popping up. What year is it? I've seen a lot of this kind of problem on USA Jacksons made right before Fender took over. It's an easy fix in any case.

I gotta play one of these. How extreme is the v-shape on the neck?

As far as the buzzing goes, it has settled in since it's been at my house and I don't think there's a real issue. The trussrod needs a turn and the bridge needs to come up a hair - the action is very low.
