  • Check this Dinky out!

I work at a fairly popular local guitar shop and was given the opportunity to buy this guitar from a guy who goes to guitar shows around a couple state area. I told him I was into Jackson and Charvel guitars if he ever came across any. He said I was in luck and showed me a couple pictures of this Dinky. He finally brought it into the shop for me to check out. I was hesitant to make an offer on the spot as he wouldn't come out and say a price right away. I hoped you guys could give me some more input.

Inside the trem cavity is 5641 W.O. number, and just to the right of that either "VZM" or "V2M". No date or anything else. Unfortunately it was brought in about half an hour to close while we were busy so I didn't get a chance to take the neck off to see the pocket stamps. He told me he would do that soon and send me more pictures.

My question is not if I should buy it, I know I should! But I just wanted to get some opinions on a fair offer for the condition and to see what you guys thought. I thought the number on the neck plate was low for what I assume to be a 90-94 guitar. There was no marks in the truss cavity. Also the signature means nothing to me. I would rather it not even be on the guitar personally. The case is also signed the same. Hard to see through the make shift protector. He didn't have any idea who's signature it was either.

Any way, I suck at imgur and uploading images so I'll just leave a direct link to all my pictures. It is the half crackle half nebula guitar I am referring to.

link doesn't seem to go anywhere sensible?
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Good call on it being Satriani! I looked up a few more sigs of his and it's definitely his. I personally still don't care that it is signed...

As far as the finish goes, I'm pretty sure this is factory. I'd prefer all crackle, but this has cool factor in my opinion. If only because it is unique.

I’d hit him with $750, maybe less, and see where it goes. The neck if I didn’t know better (and I don’t) looks almost like an import neck- no binding, rosewood, and MOP that to my eye in those shots looks like MOTO. Quite dinged up as well.

I think it's just the bad lighting. It's ebony and not moto. Feels better than any of my import (charvel) bolt ons. I was also thinking of around 700 so I'm going to probably start there. Thanks for the advice!

Cool guitar. The guy who ordered it couldn't decide between lava crackle or a space scene, and chose both

The bolt-on serials are all over the place until 1990, and that guitar does seem to fit with 89 - oversize pickup but schaller trem with the up rout. I think the V2 means volume, 2 pickup and maybe the M is mid-boost?

To clarify, is it a crackle that's been painted over, or is it a factory graphic where the crackle is a 'planet' surface?

I don't believe it was painted over, it seems they literally just wanted two graphics and couldn't decide which to go with, so they went with both!

The pickups I assume were taken out and the EMG set added later with a coil tap. Too bad, I'm not a fan of EMG's at all.

looks like it was a crackle that was painted over to me

Although weird to see the clash of two graphics like that, I'm also thinking it might be a factory paint job. :dunno:

Update: The neck was removed, work order matches. Signed Hermila Gutierrez 1/13/89

However, I will not be buying this guitar. Seller wants $1800 for it. So, be on the lookout for this one if you want to spend!
