  • Crackle finish Q.

How many here have had some of the crackle finish USA's that had a textured feel to them?
I had an 85 SD soloist brown back/flat top with a black and yellow tight crackle top.Very little clear on the top to the point you can feel the texture.
Just picked up the black and white crackle and you can feel the texture all over the body.Very little clear on it at all.
I have had 5 or 6 that had the std thick clear coat.
The lack of a thick clear on the B/W really makes it vibrate pretty hard which is good.
I wonder if you could have told them light on the clear coat.LOL.

Very nice! I remember a friend of mine used to have a zolatone finish dinky reverse. The neck was super thin!!

        Stray,

I think it is a simple matter of it being back in 1985 they didn't know if it was better to do a thinner or thicker clear over the crackle. As they got more experience, they used thicked amounts of clear.

Not a Jackson but on my 80's Warlock with green/black crackle you can feel all of the texture. Like almost no clear coat.

I had an 80's BCR Iron bird in green and black but it was covered with clear so it was smooth
Had a gunslinger in black and yellow but it was textured.
I just find it curious as to why.

A few other things to consider. You can probably feel the cracks in the white one more as the company tends to use Polyurethane over white. The Polyester will tint the white considerably. There for, the shrink back is considerable on the urethane over the years in comparison to what the shrink back on the polyester is. Chances are it was a lot smoother years ago.

Thanks Mike that makes perfect sense.
If I was to re clear it someday would polyurethane be the right choice?

Both of mine are 87 Ontario and the clear is really thick.
