  • NGD...and a mystery

I snagged this flame maple baby from Jacksonluvr, which arrived today. So far, I am really digging it. I originally was thinking this was a Jackson Strat all the way, but now I am not so sure. I noticed that it is slightly narrower than my other Jackson Strats, which are all identical as far as size goes. I took some quick measurements:

    Mystery guitar body length: 18"
    Jackson strat body length: 18"

Mystery guitar body width at horns: 10 3/8"
Jackson strat body width at horns: 11"

Mystery guitar body width at base: 12 1/8"
Jackson strat body width at base: 12 1/2"

So, it is a bit narrower, but it is bigger than the 7/8 Dinky size that I have read about. Also, the overall shape and rounded contours look like a Strat and not a Dinky to me. I understand there may be an uncommon "Dinky Strat" which differs from a "Dinky". Is that what this is?

Just a guess, but they may have scaled it down to lose some weight if it's solid maple. Doesnt someone else on here have a solid maple bodied guitar they can measure?

Hard to tell from that one not-so-great pic, but I'm going to say it's just a Dinky. You do realize that 22 fret Dinkys look different than (more common) 24 fret versions?

You have the mythical "big round dinky"?

Here's a straight-on shot. I have seen some 22-fret Dinkys, and I don't know that the horns and body edges look much different. Jason1212, your theory about it being weight-relieved on account of the maple is very astute.

                    I do, but it's a Carvin 7-string.

Here is an old thread from 2008 where the mythical "Dinky Strat" is discussed. It is far from conclusive.

I agree that it has something to do with the weight issue. Not positive, but that theory does seem to make sense.

Here's a 24 fret Dinky in all maple. It's not really that much heavier than an alder or poplar Jackson though:

                            "Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
                            Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."
