So, there's a WR1 for sale locally that has an unfinished neck rather than at painted one. Are these normal, or is it some kind of limited run?

It's normal. Older models got the oiled necks.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling. -
I believe the older WR1 models had unfinished necks, 2003? and earlier im not sure, never owned one
I assume this has a U serial number and not a J

Yep. I remember being offered that one by a guy in London. I bought one last year with a finished neck (built 2003)and got it alot cheaper and shipped from USA.
