Could still be a factory mod, you never know. May have been a Custom where that was the only difference, so they just patched a KV-2 and sent it out.
I had a RoadRunner/Coyote Custom Shop Jackson Strat a few years ago that was done that way - it was originally a stringthrough/TOM but they converted it to a hardtail and filled the holes. You could see the original stringthrough holes and TOM insert holes under the paint.

Still wouldn't be a U serial. Bolt-ons are either 4 figure (customs) or start 00 (at the moment).
