Find a right handed bass that you like, and take it to a pro guitar repair shop. They can change the nut to a left handed nut, and re-set the bridge for lefty. Then you have a left handed bass. The knob will be on the top of the bass, but Hendrix had a few guitars like that, and he sure looked cool with them.

I had a Mexi-Pbass and it was nice. Played and sounded good.
And as you said, lefty C/Js are hard to find.
Dino's idea is good as well.
