My First Jackson REALLY needs help & TLC

1993 Dinky Reverse Pro backdoored out of ebay.
Dinged but beautiful,. Abused but with great potential.






The schaller made tremelo. (JT590?)


Not exactly stock switch cover :ROTF: and missing volume knob.



All disconnected (pickups in the wrong location anyhow).

Which wires go where? That loop of white wire on the switch is not likely
stock...




Two black wires..the loose one was taped down not connected to anything.







Ok so I need:

1) Wiring help.

I think I can fill the wax area with wood filler
and redrill for the bridge PUP. Same for the stripped screw on the neck...

2) I need the nut screw down blocks...



3) Any thoughts on filling down-to-the-wood paint gouges?


4) I can get the switch knob here
and I know I can get the tremelo cover plate here
but I don't know which parts to get for the nut.

A little more of a project than I bargained for ...

Nevertheless she'll be beautiful again...after all look at what
I've got to work with...

That blade hum was originally the bridge pickup. Most people don't like it as its dark and muddy.

You are correct on the Jackson wiring scheme regarding red/white and green to switch.


I'm pretty sure the loop of white wire on the switch is stock. You need that to connect the 'halves' of that multiple tab switch.

Suggestion: Strip the licensed Floyd down to parts and soak the parts in a cup of WD40 for a while.

...and no it wasn't a fabulous deal, but I knew I really wanted
that guitar. I'd watched three cobalt blue DKMGTs slip out of
my reach in the final hours, and so just emailed the guy,
told him my price and he agreed. It's still a hell of a guitar for
$240.

I really need to know how that three-way switch is wired tho'
It doesn't seem to make sense...I'm testing it w/a multimeter.



...and where to get that replacement locknut.

The rest is easy.

Is this the nut I need?

The bottom part of the nut measured across is 43mm

Just about anyplace that sells guitar hardware. I don't think you can get just the locks, but I haven't looked for them specifically - I just get a whole new nut, or take them off one of the spares I have (if I have one).

As for the switch, is it a 5-way or 3-way?

Solder the pickup grounds to the pots, string it up, and plug it in. Then touch one pickup lead to each tab with the switch in the far-back (bridge) position until you get sound.

3-way should be easy to wire up, as only two prongs actually need a pickup wire on them. The middle (both) position is an internal bridge between those two contacts.

The other prongs are outputs and to make it easier to add splits to, like if you wanted the bridge split and the neck pickup on full, you don't have to solder both to the same pin.

My buddies used to give me shit about mine being purple (it's the same color as yours). Always looked blue to me. I gave in and dubbed it "Grimace". Threw a Screamin Demon in the bridge, sounds pretty damn good. I'd just recommend throwing some foam underneath the pickups as discussed in the Tech section recently, the pickups tended to wobble quite a bit.

It officially qualifies as a project guitar now

1) I have repaired the stripped screw holes for both PUPS.

2) Swapped the two PUPS so they are in original location.

3) Located the information (posted on Tech Q&A here) and
rewired the electronics.

4) Cleaned/oiled the fretboard and polished the rust/crap off the frets.

5) Ordered and put on Speed knobs, blade switch knob ordered.

6) Ordered the three nut clamps.

7) Given a preliminary rub down to the body.

8) Found the perfect automotive color to fill in the chips
and dings on the 'Cobalt Blue' body (Dupli-color NG FM 378 'Sonic Blue')
(knew I had the right one when I saw "sonic" heh)

9) Still need tremelo arm and plate cover for the schaller, talking
to Budman about that...would like to really dress her up but
kinda poor right now.

Even unfinished...lookin' much better now! Already knows
she's loved



Arggghh can't wait to hear her sing.

Wish those clamps would get here.

While I think of it: Saying the J-85 will be "too muddy" to my ears
doesn't take into account that I owned a Gibson L6-S for years
with the darkest PUPs EVER MADE: the famous Gibson
Super Humbuckers (otherwise known as the "the black hole for treble").

When I play slide in standard tuning...walls melt.

I think I'll like the sound just fine
