  • New RR3 pups

I'm looking for new pickups for my '05 RR3. I need somthing with higher ouput but has definition and a really smooth sound for melodic metal. I'm trying to get an older In Flames tone (Colony era) or whatever would suit the genre.

    Thanks

I have the Jazz/Distortion (Trembucker) combo in my RR3 and it is awesome. Replaced the original Duncan Designed Detonators. Made all the difference in the world. The Detonators were to muddy. The Duncan Distortion really brings out the mids and highs (I think anyway.)

            Hope this helps.

ill give out a 2nd for the Distortion. GREAT pickup. although i have EMG 81/85 in my '05 RR3 and i like them a lot as well. the 85 is smoother...possibly use that in the bridge and it would work for ya. i tried it and didnt like it though...i prefer the 81 in the bridge.

IIRC In Flames uses EMG's. Try them!

Thanks guys. I'm gonna look into a SD Jazz/Distortion combo or an EMG 81/85 combo.

Just so you know - the EMG-81 and the Duncan Distortion are radically different pickups. Personally, I love the Distortion (sweet mid-rangey sound, great for leads) and hate the 81 (dry, dead sound; zero tone...good for high-gain rhythm playing though).

If we stick to EMGs, then the 85 is a much better choice than the 81 for any pickup position IMO. It has a lot more balls.

The Jazz is much lower output than the others. If you use the neck pickup for cleans, that's good - if you use it for lead playing, not as good.

EMGs rule! Put an 85 in the bridge with either a 60 or 81 in the neck.
