• Rhoads Pro - some questions?

    Hi guys.

This guitar has come up for sale locally.

Can anyone give me an idea of the specs? I don't really know too much about the Professional series. When was it likely to have been made? I assume Japan, early 90s? How do they measure up compared to a real RR1?

Apologies for the dumb questions! I have a heap of Charvel Model series guitars but never sought out an Import Jackson before...

It's technically not a "Rhoads Pro" - this is the "Rhoads Std" model of the Professional series. The biggest difference to the pro model (aside from the fretboard), is that this guitar had the JT580LP instead of the JT590. It also had simpler electronics, and I think the neck construction is simpler than on the Pro (if I remember correctly).

Timewise, I would guess it was out at the same time as the Pro model, starting with 1990. But I think Tekkÿ would know more.

Thanks for your help. Can you elaborate on your comment about the neck construction? It is still neck-through, right? Seller says set neck which kind of threw me.

Also the seller has given me a serial number of J202075 if that helps for dating it?

Re: Rhoads Pro - some questions?

The serial numbers on imports aren't as helpful for dating, but as far as I know, 1994-95 would have been the end of the neck-thru Professionals. The trem might be a 580, but I've heard/read that the early versions were of better construction than the more recent trems.

I would consider that guitar to be similar to a current RR5. Every import I've owned from that era had a much nicer fretboard than the light rosewood so common now, but the stock pickups might not be to your liking compared to Duncans. I had a USA RR-2 with a JT580LP trem and had no problems at all with that unit.

Oops, forgot to ask what sort of price these things go for used? The guy wants above US$500. Is that reasonable?

Awesome, thanks so much for your help. I've got a RR1, so this thing would be a backup

Well, both the Pro and the Std are true neck-thru. However, I do remeber that there was a difference. I think the Rhoads Pro was a 3-piece quartersawn maple neck, while the Std had a one-piece maple neck (both probably with scarf joints though). It was long ago since the MoAIP was up though, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact difference was at this time.

                1992 IIRC

It is a MIJ neckthrough but 5 bills a little high for these IMO

That depends on availability in New Zealand, I would imagine. Not sure what the prospects are for getting a reasonable price on a neck-thru Jackson, based on what I've heard of Australian prices.

Cheers guys, thanks for your help. And yes, a neck-through Rhoads is a rare site in NZ.

I had a white one with dots. The necks on these are amazing. Mine had a nice thin flat feel to the back of the neck. I am sorry it is gone now.

If this was in Australia, 500 US or about 7-800 aussie would be a pretty cool deal for a neck through jackson. I know that guitar crazy (sydney guitar store which specialises in used gear) would slap a 1000-1500 price tag on it

I also think that 500$ for a rhoads std. in europe is a really nice price...

Just when you think you have enough guitars, one surfaces.

I went to a pawn shop on a VERY rough side of a town I deliver to today on the job. They had a rainbow crackle but the front two pickups we're yanked, the body was beat to hell....and the deal breaker? KAHLER!!! EEEK! I don't care for those things and passed. They wanted $200 for it and a guy behind me was looking at it. It was a model 6.

Good luck with this V, hope you get it.

I was at the luthiers last night. They're shimming my 3DR necks and making them nice nice(grind and polish too) my wallet is going to feel this for sure, BUT when I plug it in to the amp, it'll all be forgotten!
