  • Dominion Re-finish

I finally pulled the trigger on having my Primer Dominion re-finished and couldn't resist posting a preview. Marty Bell was great to work with and managed to give me exactly the finish I had pictured in my mind.

The inspiration was the "Amethyst Black" paint from McLaren:

    And here's the result:

As on the McLaren, it looks almost black until the light catches it and you see a rich purple with some shimmer to it. The previous satin silver hardware is being swapped to black and the bridge pickup is being swapped to either a Duncan Custom or DiMarzio Dominion, either of which is hotter and more focused than the 59. Lastly, Dave/Budman is doing a new truss cover with just the Jackson "J" as on the Sweetone series since the new finish covers the headstock logo. I can't wait to get it all together!

Sweet colour! And if you're changing the pickups, get purple ones...

I agree! Or at least get black/purple for the pickups.

Thanks for the compliments I did think about purple pups, but decided to stick with black to keep the focus on the finish. Aside from that, the pearl in this paint can appear blue/burple/purple depending on the lighting.

Cool. Of course, the black pups will work fine anyway.

Love the color and the Goodwood pics.

Here are a couple more pics. It's tough to get the camera to show how it appears in person. If I use a flash, it turns kind of blue.

The luthier doing the re-build, re-wire, and set up said it should be ready to go this weekend, and I can not wait. Dave (fretsonthenet) did a mock up of the truss cover and nailed it, so it's just a matter of getting the piece made. Pics to follow, of course!

Aside from the new truss cover, the Dominion is done and I'm very happy with the way it has turned out. It's tough to capture the color and liveliness, for lack of a better word, of the finish.
