  • My DX10D(FS?) needs some help!

    First,
I have a DX10D (maybe FS model) (dated in the neck pocket 2001) with a JT-580LP and a EMG 81TW in the bridge and a EMG 89R in the neck. When I disassembled the guitar, I noticed that the name in the neck pocket says DX10DFS The previous owner gouged out the rear of the trem cavity on the top of the guitar to install a OFR and D-Tuna. He also either tried to drill 2 new holes, 1 for a 3 way selector, and 1 for a kill switch. The body otherwise is flawless. I can't stand the carve out on the trem cavity and want to fix it, but know that the translucent flamed finish will have to go and I'll have to go to a solid color. My question is whether to actually fix it or leave it as is, and if I fix it, would it be best to use epoxy for the holes and the carved out trem cavity? BTW, I added the chromed metal pickup rings. I swear by them now! I am going to put these on all my guitars!

Here is a pic of my Jackson DX10D(maybe a Firestorm?)..

You can see in this pic how gouged out the trem cavity is.

I can't think of any way you could match that finish with a fill-in, unless you airbrush the flame pattern on; it's been done, but it's not easy. You could clean up the rout and leave it, but looking neater, or you could fill it and refinish in a solid color, as you guessed. If you have a router and a pattern bit, cleaning the rout would be a snap, the other two would be fairly difficult to very difficult, IMHO.

With the amount of work required to fix it, I would be tempted to just buy a replacement body.

Actually, I am going to fill the cavity and extra holes and refinish it I do believe. I really didn't want to do a solid color, and what's crazy is that I just met a local guy that has a few sheets of bubinga burl veneer 30"x50" each.. oh yeah!

So I'm going to fill, sand, and re-top the guitar. I really wanted some kind of figured wood, so that will work better than I ever could have hoped for.. I'm excited, can't ya tell!

I have a wood shop, but I'll need to make some kind of laminate press jig to glue it on the top....
