Charvel Model 4?

Dear All,

Have mercy on the newbie. Would appreciate some help identifying the guitar on the link below:

From my own reasearch, it looks like 1988. Rosewood board on maple, sharkies, bolt-on, JT-6. Originally I thought it was a Model 4, but the control configuration is throwing me off. H-S-S, with 5 way switch, mid boost. It's the 5 way that has always thrown me.

Specification wise, it looks very similar to the SL-145-SSH from the 1989 catalogue with the exception of a non recessed JT-6, and bolt on neck. Last switch (larger black one) is actually a kill switch. 5 way and mid look stock, not so sure about the kill switch.

Is this just a modified version of the Model 4?

There's a lot suspicious about that one. Neck screws are weird. Added Floyd nut and string bar. Added 5 way.

Hello folks. First, thanks for all the replies. Just to point out a few things about the guitar. I'm happy emough it's a genuine Charvel, but accept that bits and pieces may have been changed over the years. When I bought it it I was aware of this and suspected the screws were not originals as there is a little play in the neck. I thought the holes were oversized, but on further investigation I have also found the gasket that should be behind the neck plate is missing. There were some other parts missing such as back plate, some saddle blocks, truss rod cover, etc., but the only real place to get this stuff is from the USA, and when you add the cost of UK customs and outrageous 'handling' charges it makes the whole thing expensive. Have to admit, I never spotted the nut or string tee. However, it is my first Model 4. Thanks once again for the help.

I think what Henrik means is this is what the plate on a model series should look like.

As far as the rest goes...The nut has been changed from a Kahler behind the nut lock to a Floyd type. The string tree seems to be added just to cover the screw holes from the old nut. As far as the switches go, I think you have it backwards. The kill switch looks like one of the original toggle switches. The middle and 5-way are the mods. That black rubber piece where the blade switch would go for the bridge pickup is where the third switch would normally be.

Other than that, perfectly stock.

That's exactly the kind of guitar I'd keep as a daily player rather than getting it picked apart by buyers.
I have a feeling you'd never get what it would be worth to you, as a player.

None of the mods are a sacrifice to tone or playability, but it could be talked down to half the
price of an unmodded Model 4.
Not a problem to fix the neck screws.

Just my opinion of course.

Thanks again for the comments, and I agree with all them. Have been in contact with FOTN already, nice guy, but as I say by the time you ship across the pond, pay customs and a handling fee it all adds up. It's not the shipping and customs I mind paying, but it really annoys me to pay an additional $20 for Royalmail/Parcefore to collect say $11 in customs and tax (VAT). I'd prefer it if they donned a mask and just stole my wallet...
