Make sure the neck isn't broke?

Not sure what else to say.

Try to get Dan Erlewine's book (not the repair guide, the setup book). He goes over things to check when looking to pick up a new guitar in general.

Underlying problems? Some of them have Kahlers.

Yeah, you mention this one has one, like I would expect an '86 to.

They are not hard to set up as long as you want to use light strings. If you are into super heavy drop-tuning then you're going to have problems.

if you're only lightly using the trem (or not using it at all) it won't give you any problems. Make sure all the moving parts (fine tuners, etc) can move freely. Only other thing I can think of, sometimes the teeth(?) that hold the ball end of the strings can break off, so make sure that they are all there. That's not always obvious if the guitar is missing any strings but you will find it a problem when you get her home & try to string her up.
            Hail yesterday

                Par for the course.

I'd be curious if you like the pickups. I have a black Model 4 but someone gutted the electronics and it's now a Full Shred with a volume and tone. I've thought of restoring it to original condition.
