and just so we're clear, that wasn't my advice to anyone looking for an old LP or Strat. That was the advice given to me as a young guitarist back in the 80s.

I'd say that in general that advice was correct. Gibson was on a downward spiral until sold in 1986, then rebounded in the 90s. Pretty much the same as Fender. I took a gamble buying my '77. They can be hit and miss. I just wanted to try a maple-necked solid body and went after this specific model.
