• JS30 Kelly, King V and RR questions...

Hey there,

I saw a JS30KE Kelly at a local shop and I'm thinking of buying it. The price was so good that I think I may also get a JS30KV or a JS30RR as well. I have a few questions for all the experts here on these particular axes...

1. How do the Jackson CVR2 Humbuckers that come in these models sound? Would they best be replaced? I play mostly thrash/death metal so I need lots of bite and crunch

2. I plan on tuning one of the guitars to C standard. Do you think this will be an issue with staying in tune or intonation issues? Is the 25.5 scale length okay for this tuning? Would a set of 11's be enough or should I go for 12's for the C standard geetar?

3. The dealer also had a sweet looking RXD10 Rhoads for $600 that I just loved. It has the Duncans and the JT580 whammy bar. Would this guitar be suitable for tuning to C standard? How much of an issue would the floating bridge be? I don't use the bar that much, but the price was very sweet on this and I really want a guitar I can tune that low.

Any help/advice you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The pickups in the RX10D are Duncan Designed, not "real" Duncans, so I doubt they would be any better than the Jacksons. As for the floating bridge, you could always block it so it doesn't move. However, the JS30RR has 24 frets, which you won't find on any other Rhoads models.

12-54(ernie ball beefy) is what i play too on C
my bandmate is in favour for the 10-52(ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom) on C
i think anything in that range should work
but it`s all personal taste

I have a JS30 Randy rhoads and I replaced the pickups with 2 emg 81s because the jackson pickups really sucked in my opinion. The bridge pickup wasn't too bad but the neck one was way way too thin. Other than that it's a sweet guitar

I have a JS30 Warrior and tune it to B standard with 13-56 D'Addarios. It stays in tune, and intonation is good (at least after I set it up).
For C standard you should better go with 12s.

Pickups are ok, not amazing, but ok... for a backup guitar.
Well, the same can be said for the Duncan Designeds.
For a main player I would want something better, real Duncans for example... but for stock pickups in such a cheap axe those CVR2s are pretty good.

I am definetly getting the JS30KE. I put a pic of it on my desktop and I can't stop looking at it! Thanks for all the help! Perhaps later this summer if money is available I will buy the RXD10. I would love that in metallic blue.

The CVR2 pickups will serve you well. I started a huge thread including my reviews of the JS30 series and the CVR2s at NAMM 04. I'll see if I can find it for you in the archives.

Thanks!
Seems like there's not alot of love for MII guitars and I was wondering if the workmanship really is that bad. The prices on the JS series are way cheap, but they are MII so do any of you think will they fall apart 6 months down the road?

Well, get one and report back to us!

The hardware (switches, pots, etc) is gonna be the weak link. Maybe you can replace them with higher quality units. I may still get a JS30WR if I can get a good price on one.

What price is that local JS30KE?

Re: JS30 Kelly, King V and RR questions...

$400, which is sweet. If the electronics are in fact the problem area of these guitars, then that's better than I thought. As you said, I can always replace them. I was more worried about the neck, frets and general construction of it. But if they're just plain shite, then the X series is obviously my next choice.
I also want to get a King V. The thing is, the pups and sharkies are the only major differences between the JS King V's and the X series ones, so if they're both solidly built, then the JS KV would seem to be a more logical choice. Sharkies are cool though.
Up here the X series runs $600. For only $200 more, I could get 2 JS's!

No, if you want a KV, I definitely recommend the KVX10 over the JS. It has sharkies, yes, but also the body is made of alder, a superior tonewood than cedro. Made in Japan better than MII.

The KVX10 is definetly going to be mine. Next payday (which will also be my birthday ) I will be ordering one. I think I will hold off on the Kelly until I can afford the KE3.
