• 1984 RR1

I'm thinking of buying a 1984 Rhoads guitar for
obvious reasons but I have no idea what to offer the guy.
Serial # RR0420 Color black. Original guitar and pickups.
Comes with original case and Charvel warranty. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it a Rhoads Custom or a Rhoads Student?

Custom = Ebony fretboard, neck/headstock binding, sharkfin inlays
Student = Rosewood fretboard, no binding, dot inlays

There are a few exceptions and prices generally differ between the two.

I believe that would make it a student.

No pics but a nice guitar, very little wear.

Anyone have a price guide to look up the serial #?

There are no price guides to look up the serial number, only the serial number chart - click the link above that says Resources, then the one on that page that says Serial Number Charts, then find the RR listings.

I've not seen many Students go above $1000 recently. $600 is fair IMO.

Student, String thru and serial 420,
I'd say $800-1000?
Could be more if the condition is mint.
I think I have seen similar ones on E-bay.

Yeah, $1k or so would be my absolute top but it'd have to be dead mint with documentation for that. ~$750-800 would be fair if it's in nice shape, maybe a bit less.

O.K. So is this a low line of a Rhoads model?

Re: 1984 RR1

Everything was custom order before ~1990 but generally there were two RR "models", custom & student with the features described above. Still a hand built custom, just with slightly different features than the top-of-the-line version.

Think of Jackson's "Custom" and "Student" models as being the same as Gibson's Les Paul "Custom" and "Special" models. Same build quality, different materials, different cosmetics (binding, etc), but otherwise just as good.

Don't buy this as an investment piece, buy it to play. Student prices are not climbing anywhere near the rate that a Custom from the same time would be, and even then they're carrying a lower price than what they sold for originally.
Additionally, there are tons of other Student model RRs out there that have more expensive features (graphics, gold hardware, factory Floyds, etc), so this one would probably go up $5 a year in collector value.

Know anything about Charvel model 6's? I have one but dont know its value. Just curious.
