  • Charvel 550xl clear coat repair

I recently got my hands on a Charvel 550xl; I had one about 10 years ago and it was stolen so I am glad I found another just like it.

If I repair the clear coat, to get rid of those surface scratches and assuming I do the job right, would I be diminishing the value of the guitar?

    I appreciate any advice!

How deep is the deepest scratch? If they're all shallow and limited to just the clearcoat (no damage to the original paint underneath), you might be able to get away with compound + polish, or even just polish if they're very shallow (e.g. if it's just swirls that you want to remove).

    Compound: https://www.meguiars.com/automotive/...-152-oz-liquid

    Polish: https://www.meguiars.com/automotive/...6-16-oz-liquid

It's a common production guitar; you are not diminishing the value or "destroying a rare specimen" by doing this work on it.

Watch automotive finish repair videos and automotive scratch removal videos for the basic restoration curriculum, where the most abrasive products (low grit sandpaper) are used at the beginning and gradually finer and finer products are used (higher grit sandpapers and micro mesh papers), ending with compound and polish.

I bought a couple of bottles of this stuff a while back and it works well for surface scratches.
