I agree with Shawn. The big headed strats from the 70's are sweet.I can go to my local shop that are eat up with Fender Strats(50 or 60 of them)and can only find a handful that play and sound decent. The same shop that is supposed to be a Charvel/Jackson dealer may have one or two in stock. It sucks that I have to drive at least 100 miles to find any Jackson guitars.Okay,I'm through preachin! Chuck nailed it. It was a '57. I paid $2500 for that guitar 10 years ago. I also have had a '56 refinished, two 58's (one stock, one refin) and a few 60's models. The 50's ones were always my favorites. Especially the 1956 soft V neck models with ash bodies. Strat heaven!
I had a '55 refin and man ,the wood vibrates when you hit the strings.
The pickups actually don't sound huge but the sustain you get from the body and neck makes the sound huge!
Newer guitars would never sound like that.
Yeah, those old ones can be LOUD unplugged. Even my '59 Jazzmaster with sustain sucking tremolo tailpiece is really loud acoustically. My favorite guitars are naturally loud unplugged. I do have maybe 3 Jacksons that are a nice volume unplugged, but most of them are rather subdued.
I've got texas specials in my strat reissues. Those through the SLO sound CRUSHING! (Pay attention SRV tone seekers) I have an HRR Jap strat I recently put a DiMarzio SDS-1 in the neck. It's had all kinds of pickups in it at one time or another. The SDS is wicked FAT! It's like a soapbar. It's actually a bridge pickup, but I don't care. What sounds good, sounds good! With three of those in your strat, the sound would tickle your balls. They hum way more though. But again, I don't care. I think it's a great pickup.
I have a 2004 american deluxe strat and I love it. I have always prefered maple necks on strats for the feel. I haven't decided if I am keeping the samarium pups yet, I was thinking of dropping some fralin vintage hots or texas specials in if I decide to get rid of them.
