  • 1987 Model 3 Wiring diagram needed

I have a new (to me) 1987 charvel model 3 in the typical HSS configuration with a plastic-bodied import style 5-way switch. The middle pickup is not working at all, so before I assume it's faulty, I would like to verify the wiring. This is my first encounter with this type of switch so I am clueless. Can anyone point me in the direction of a wiring diagram for this guitar - or perhaps, if you own a model 3, maybe a picture of your wiring cavity?

Thanks so much for any help you might provide - I have scoured the net and not come up with much.

I replaced all the electronics in mine, but I am assuming you are confused by the selector switch? Have a look at this so you can 'translate' from a standard switch (or IIRC ibanez diagrams have the import switch)

Yes, the selector switch is the confusing part for me because only the first 4 solder blades have wires attached - the last 4 are blank. Which is why I was hoping someone maybe had a picture of the original wiring, it seems my setup has to at least be missing a couple wire runs at least.

What makes you think that? Is there something lacking tonally perhaps?

There are different ways to wire the switch. Like I said, I would find a standard wiring and either 'translate' to the import switch (or just go buy a new switch and wire it up). Or, like I also suggested, look at some ibanez diagrams:

It's your standard HSS>1vol>1tone Wiring, just with the switch having all termination points on one side.

What makes me think it's not wired correctly is that the middle pickup makes zero sound - like it's not hooked up. I mean sure, the pickup could be bad - I just don't see that a lot. And in those Ibanez links you sent, all the switch contacts except two are used, and they are spread all over the 8 contacts. My switch only has the first 4 wired up. So that's what makes me think the wiring is sketchy.

A picture of my current wiring might help - I'll try to get one tonight.
