• What is Ash (punky)?

I had asked Matt at Matts Music about this.
I'm working on a Charvel Star order and asked for an Ash body. On the Quote form that J/C sent back it says Ash (punky).
He said that he would ask them about it, but I'm wondering if anybody here may have already dealt with this question.

Any ideas out there?

Punky is a term for wood that has begun to decay before the tree dies. Rot begins in the center of the trunk near the bottom, then works its way upward and outward toward the bark. The fibrous texture is gone, so the wood is very easy to saw but difficult to split evenly.

My custom XTRR (owned by Tommi nowadays) had ash (punky) on the work order. It sounds great!

Think swamp ash. GREAT tone wood!

I love it, and have two customs with ash bodies and a third one on order right now. Here's the back of my custom Dinky to give you an idea of appearance...

Here is another example from 1991 Limited Edition Strathead Charvel that I used to own:

You want swamp ash or punky ash... it's lightweight and has great tone; though, can be bright sounding with lots of spank.
Northern hard ash is also supposed to be a good tone wood, but it's much heavier.

I think I'm finishing up the specs this week.

+1....mine too! For the weight and tone! I rarely build guitars with anything but, save for the occasional Korina piece.

Yep.

when you think of punky ash, think of regular maple vs spalted maple....No tonal difference, but the diseased tree (punky or spalted) just looks cool sometimes

Swamp ash kicks ass. I had a '63 Strat in the early '90s that was Swamp Ash...light as a feather and had tone like nothing I have ever experienced...ever.
